Monument to Simeon of Polatsk (by sculptor Alexandr Finsky)
Outstanding poet, playwright, translator, teacher, public and religious figure Samuel Petrovsky-Sitnyanovich (1629-1680) was a leading teacher in the Ortodox fraternal school under the Polatsk Epiphany Monastery. After moving to Moscow due to his outstanding poetic talent and scholarship he was promoted to the position of the Court Poet for Russian Tsars and tutor for therir children. Thanks to his great efforts the Hellene-Greek Academy, first higher learning institution, was established in Moscow. he also orgaized free from censorship the Verhnyaya (Upper) Print Shop. His famous poetic compilations "Vertograd Mnogotsvetny" (Multicolored Garden of Church) and "Rifmologion" were a kind of rhymed encyclopedias of Christian symbolism, ancient history and theology, control of one of the region's major waterways and thus established good trade relations with Baltic and Scandinavian States as well as with the Western Europe.
